If you would like to import your category structure via CSV file (usefull for quickly importing large category structures), please follow the steps below. This can be used to import up to 3 levels of categories: Top Level Categories, Sub Level Categories, and Sub-Sub Level Categories (a 3rd tier of categories for a total of three tiers).

Step 1: Create Your Category Structure in a CSV file

  1. Download the Category Structure Import Template

  2. Open up the file and expand the width of the columns so you can see all of the text in each one

  3. In column A, leave the word “member” there

  4. Column B will have all of your Top Level Categories, Column C will have all of your Sub Categories (optional), and Column D will have all of your Sub-Sub Categories (optional)

  5. Fill out the spreadsheet with your categories by replacing the placeholders in the template (Download an example with a few categories filled in here)

Step 2: Import Your Category Structure

  1. Login to the Admin area of your site

  2. Navigate to Toolbox >> Category Manager

  3. Click on the Import Categories button

  4. Choose your Import Options

    1. Preview category structure before importing - Selecting this will display a preview of your category structure before it is imported

    2. First row is the header columns (Do not import this line) - If you are importing a category structure following the provided template, please un-check this option, as the import template does not have headers

    3. Delete existing website top and sub level categories - Checking this box will delete the category structure before import. Un-checking this box will leave your current category structure intact and will simply add the new categories to the existing structure.

    4. Delete existing “member” top and sub level categories - Since this tool can be used to import different category structures for different member features of the site, you may see “member” or something else here depending on which member feature these categories are being imported for. Checking this box will delete the existing category structure for the member feature you are importing this category structure for (“member” is the default and is the same as the “website” top and sub level categories as shown above). Un-checking this box will leave your current category structure intact and will simply add the new categories to the existing structure.

  5. Select the CSV file you would like to import

  6. Click on the “Upload Members Now” button

  7. If you chose to see a preview, you will now be shown the preview. If there are duplicate categories displaying here, don’t fret! All duplicates shown here will be automatically removed.

  8. If the category structure looks correct, click on the "Continue with Import" button at the bottom of the page. If you would like to cancel the import, click on the “Go Back” button.
